Survival Camp

Hi everyone,

Next weekend, June 24-26, is our final end of year camp. This will be a combination canoe camp and survival camp. Our plan is to canoe from Keswick landing into the Saint John river and camp, normally, on an island Friday night. Please RSVP by Monday if your son is attending.

Saturday, after noon, we will be going into "survival mode". This will basically mean that the boys will only have the supplies in their emergency kits to use for the rest of the camp. We will fish and gather edible plants (as possible) and build shelters on Saturday night. They will not have access to their camping supplies or additional food unless it is really necessary. This activity is meant to be a close simulation of a survival situation. We will ensure that all youth have access to emergency supplies, first aid, and water as required.

Drop off:

We will meet at Keswick Landing at 6pm on Friday. We will proceed from there to the launch site at 6:15.

Pickup:

Pickup will be at the northside green, in Fredericton, at 2pm on Sunday.

Food:

The boys should arrive fed on Friday night. They are also responsible for bringing all other snacks and food required, including:

Friday night snack (suggestion: trail mix, chips, hotdogs)
Saturday morning breakfast (suggestion: instant oatmeal, peanut butter & bread)
Saturday morning snack (suggestion: trail mix, granola bars)
Saturday lunch (suggestion: sandwiches)
Juice or water

End of year camp - Survival Camp

Hi everyone,

Our last regular meeting night for Scouts this season will be at the BBQ on June 13th. However, we have scheduled our end of year camp for June 24-26.

I will send out further details on this camp in the coming week but we are expecting it to be a two night camp (Friday and Saturday). The first night will probably be a canoe camp followed by the second night being our "Survival camp"

End of year BBQ

There is an end of year BBQ scheduled for Monday June 13th. It will be held at Killarney Lake beach park and the rain location will be at the Nassis church. The BBQ starts at 6:30 and is open to all Scouts and family.

This will also be the time where we welcome new Scouts up from Cubs and some of our Scouts will move up to Ventures.

I believe that those aged for Ventures (entering Grade 9 or later) next year include: Zane, Matthew Y, Cameron and Alec. If I've missed anyone please let me know.

Fundy Park - Goose River Trail - Redux

We had a very successful backpacking trip in Fundy. The Goose River Trail was a good length, had lots of nice big hills to climb and gave a nice view at the end. The weather cooperated and the bugs stayed away...mostly.

Fundy Backpacking Trip

Our first backpacking trip of the year is coming up this weekend. We are going to be doing the Goose River Trail at Fundy National Park.

I need an RSVP by Wednesday at the latest so that we can plan the details of the camp.

This will be a strenuous 3-4 hour hike in each direction (approximately 8km each way). We will be completely self contained. Everything that the boys need will be carried on their backs. The trail starts at Wolfe Point and meanders along the coastline. The campsite is within spitting distance of a great beach-combing beach. It's a trip that the boys will be sure to remember!

The details:

Drop off: 9am on Saturday at Nassis United Church (back parking lot)
Pickup: 3:30pm on Sunday at Nassis United Church
Cost: $20

We will be car pooling to this camp. Depending on the number of Scouts coming we may need volunteers to drive there and back. Please indicate, when you RSVP, if you are able to help out with driving.

Gear:

The equipment list for this trip emphasizes low weight. It is critical that everything the boys bring can fit into a hiking back pack securely. There can be no gear left to carry in their hands.

We have extra backpacks if anyone doesn't have one. Please let me know if you do not have a large and sturdy frame backpack. This cannot be substituted. All gear is mandatory. If you don't have something please ask.

Dear Parents and Friends-

Scouts Canada, New Brunswick Council recently informed us that registration fees would be increasing for the next Scouting year, and they have introduced a Spring and Summer Pre-Registration which would include a fee and discount structure. The Scouts Canada, New Brunswick Council rates are: Spring $165, Summer $170 and Fall $180.

Here at 2^nd Nashwaaksis, we have decided to provide a further $10 discount for each Registration option. The fee structure would be:

-$155 (same as last year) with Spring registration and fee paid in full by June 13^th, 2011

-$160 with Summer registration and fee paid in full by August 31, 2011

-$170 at Fall Registration in September 2011.

The Family Plan is still offered and these discounts are applicable to Spring, Summer and Fall rates. The above fees apply for the first youth in a family, the second youth is $30 less than the first, the third youth is $50 less than the second, and no charge for additional youth in the family.

We would encourage you to consider an Early Registration option in order to take advantage of the biggest discount possible. Please note that the Spring and Summer discounts require payment in full.

The date for Early Spring Registration was chosen to coincide with the year-end BBQ (June 13th with June 15th as rain date) for our sections. There will be an opportunity to register, and to ask questions of Tom Austin, Doug Prosser and myself. We hope to see you there.

Hi everyone,

Here are the recipes that we made this evening at Scouts, they are from a great cookbook called "Lip Smackin' Vegetarian Backpacking".

I will be sending out further details on our upcoming camp soon. I will bring the 'spirit lifter" bars as a supplement for the camp. The boys also brought home the "Procrastinator's deliverance". They can bring that, or something else suitable for their meal on the camp. I'll send out more details...

Procrastinator's Deliverance

At home:

1 cup Uncle Ben's instant rice

1 envelope Lipton cup-o-soup

1/4 tsp dried basil

1/4 tsp dried oregano

1/4 tsp ground cumin

Combine all ingredients in a heavy duty freezer bag.

On the trail:

Add 1 1/2 cups of boiling water. Let stand for 5 minutes.

Spirit Lifters

At home:

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup quick-cooking oats

1/4 cup wheat germ

1 tbsp grated orange rind

1/2 cup butter

2 eggs

1 cup slivered almonds

1/4 cup raisins

1/4 cup flaked coconut

1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350F. Combine flour, sugar, oats, wheat germ, and orange rind. Beat in butter, eggs, almonds, raisins, coconut and chocolate chips. Line 9x9 pan with parchment paper. Pour in batter and bake for 35 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.

Spring biking camp details

We are having a biking camp this weekend, may 14th & 15th. Please RSVP by Wednesday at the latest if your son is attending.

Here are the details:

Drop-off: 9am on Saturday at Nashwaaksis United Church (back parking lot)

Pickup: 11am on Sunday at Mactaquac water tower Map (http://goo.gl/maps/Gxhl)

Bikes: Everyone must have a bike that is in good working order. Bikes will be checked at tonights meeting. If you cannot make the meeting tonight please contact me to make alternate arrangements for a bike checkup. Everyone must have a proper fitting helmet.

Dress in layers on Saturday. It will start chilly and get warmer.

Extra shoes are mandatory and should be packed because we WILL be getting wet and muddy on the bike ride.

We will provide all meals except for lunch and snacks on Saturday. We will serve supper on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday . We will have extra water available and they should only need 1L for the bike ride.

Gear will be transported to the Mactaquac camp site in a trailer. The Scouts will only need to carry what is needed for the ride.

Biking camp

Hi everyone,

We are planning another biking camp for the weekend of May 14th & 15th. This will be a similar format to our last biking camp. I'll send out specific gear details later this week or early next week.

In preparation for this, next week we are asking that all Scouts bring their bike to our meeting on Monday night. We will do an inspection of the bikes to make sure that they are functioning adequately for the trip. We'll go for a bike ride after the inspection and tuning. All Scouts that are planning on attending the camp on the 14th must bring their bike on Monday.

If anyone does not have a bike that is in good working condition (or the right size), please contact me and we will try to make alternate arrangements to borrow a bike.

I should have looked at the weather before sending my last note...I just looked at the forecast for tonight and it is calling for rain and snow. That's obviously not the best weather for transporting bikes or riding bikes.

We are postponing the bike maintenance. Sorry for the confusion.

We will be working on shelter building skills for this weekend instead.

Greer Creek Camp

Since the weather isn't ideal for biking (uggh...we still have snow!) we have decided that it would be best to change the camp this weekend to a different location and activity.

We will be going to Greer Creek instead. Some of the Scout will have been to this camp previously. It is a beautiful spot above Nackawic.

We will be doing a weekend of shelter building and orienteering. Friday night we will spend in the lodge but we plan to have the Scouts building shelters on Saturday and then sleeping in them Saturday night. This is still winter camping weather and Scouts must come prepared to sleep outside. It is still very cold at night!

Since Greer Creek is a fair distance away, we will be car pooling from the church. Here is a map to the camp: http://goo.gl/maps/Mb6K

Drop off: Car pooling will be coordinated at the Nashwaaksis United Church at 6pm on Friday night. Front parking lot. We will need volunteers to car pool.

Pick-up: For those traveling with others in the car pool, we will arrive at the church again at approximately 5pm on Sunday.

Camp cancelled - Sunday activity

Hi everyone,

I think that it's going to be too wet for the camp tomorrow. When it's damp it is much harder to stay warm and we want to make sure that the guys have a good winter camping experience. So, camp is canceled.

The weather on Sunday is looking really good. We have decided instead to do a snowshoeing activity on Sunday. Sunday is also the Baden-Powell Scout service at the Nashwaaksis United Church. This is a good opportunity for us to show our support of the church, who is our sponsor and provides our space and other support to our group.

Here is our new plan:

Part B - Snowshoeing from the Nassis church to Claudie road and finishing at Sunset Church

- Leave the Nassis Church at approximately 11:45am on Sunday.

- Walk to McAdam Avenue

- Snowshoe across to Claudie road.

- Eat lunch (please bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks)

- Arrive at Sunset church at 4pm for pickup

Please make sure that your Scout comes dressed with a warm jacket, snowpants, hat, mittens (2 pairs), winter boots and day pack for carrying supplies. Scouts should also bring a 2L water bottle, lunch, snacks, knife, first aid kit, matches, snowshoes (optional).

Winter camp details

Hi everyone,

Our second winter camp is coming up this weekend at Mactaquac. Please RSVP as soon as possible to confirm whether or not your Scout is attending.

Drop off: Mactaquac park water tower parking lot - 10am Saturday
Pickup: Same location - 11am Sunday
Cost: $10

As this is a winter camp, having the right equipment is of paramount importance. Our camp this weekend has no lodge so all Scouts will be sleeping outside in made shelters. Gear is important to stay warm. You can find the winter camping gear list at:

The Scouts are also required to bring a packed lunch for Saturday as well as snacks for the day. All other food will be provided.

All gear should come packed in a bag(s) that are easy to carry and waterproof since we will be hiking in approximately 1km. No garbage bags for carrying gear.

All Scouts should bring a toboggan. This will help carrying gear.

If you don't have any of the gear on the gear list please let me know and I will help arrange some.

Finally, there is a chance that we might have rain this weekend. If there is rain we will probably have to postpone the camp. I will send out details closer to the time as the forecast develops. Please check your email or the website tomorrow night and Friday night for updates.

Scout Month activities

Hi everyone,

As you may be aware, February is Scout Month. There are two upcoming events at our group around this.

All Sections Banquet

Our group will be holding a banquet on February 23rd at 6pm. There will be a full ham dinner with potatoes, vegetables and desert. This is cooked by the Nashwaaksis United Church womans group and they do an amazing job on the meal. Entertainment will be provided by the Beaver, Cub and Scout sections. This is a family event and everyone is welcome. The cost is by donation.

Baden-Powell Sunday Service

The Nashwaaksis United Church will be holding their annual Baden-Powell Sunday service on February 20th. This service includes participation of the youth in the ceremony and ushering. All are welcome and attending Scouts should wear their uniforms or Scout shirts.

Scouts reminder - warm clothing

Hi everyone,

This is a reminder to everyone to make sure that your Scout comes dressed appropriately for outdoor activities to every meeting. Tonight, as normal, we will be doing primarily outdoor activities. All Scouts must have boots, hats, gloves, snow pants and winter jackets.

It is a good idea to bring an extra pair of sneakers to each meeting as well.

We have had a lot of youth coming lately wearing only sneakers and often with no other outdoor clothing. That makes it difficult for the rest of the group and not very fun for the youth when they can't participate in our activities.

Also, tonight we will be snowshoeing. We have enough snowshoes for everyone but your Scout can optionally bring their own pair if they have them.

This is a reminder that our meeting on Monday night (Dec. 20th) is our annual Christmas party. We will be starting at 6pm and going until 9pm.

We will be having a potluck dinner for the scouts as part of the meeting. So please make sure that your Scout makes a dish to bring to the dinner. Yes, THEY should be making the dish. (you can give direction if needed)

Saturday - Scout Tree Pickup Sign installation

We are getting ready to do our Scout Christmas Tree Pickup again this year. In preparation for this we need to put up signage around the city. pocket knives

Hi everyone,

We will be doing a carving project tonight using our pocket knives. Please send one if your scout has one. If not we will have a few spares available.

We often (almost weekly) do activities that require pocket knives. When you are doing your xmas shopping you might want to consider adding that to your gift ideas list if your scout doesn't already have one.

If you are looking for ideas on buying knives, the Swiss Army knives are good (although a little pricey). Opinel is a good brand. They are cheap, sturdy and work well. (I think Canadian Tire carries both). Multi-tools can work but they don't tend to be as good for carving, they are heavier and expensive (for a reasonable quality one)

If you aren't sure what to look for in a knife don't hesitate to ask.

The Christmas Parade is 5pm on this Saturday evening. We will be doing setup of the float Saturday morning.

As with last year, we are going to meet for breakfast at Willie Oree before. The Y's Men are putting on their monthly charity breakfast. The cost is $5. After breakfast we will head up to Oleary Pontiac to assemble the float. We should be there around 9:30. Pickup will be around 11:30. The boys should wear work clothes.

For the parade itself we will meet at the exhibition grounds at 4pm. The scouts should wear warm clothing (winter coats, boots, hats, mitts) as well as their scout neckers. Pickup will be immediately following the parade at the same location.

Please RSVP if your son will be attending the setup and the parade itself.

Haunted Hike Details

I meant to send out a message yesterday on this. Sorry for the late notice, hopefully your Scout has already passed on this info.

We have spent our last two Monday night meetings preparing for our annual "Haunted Hike" that is happening tonight. This event is an annual Halloween tradition where the Scouts try (and usually succeed!) to scare the Cubs on a hike through the woods.

We have a scary story planned and a hiking route behind the Super Store with all sorts of "features" to make the hike "interesting".

The hike goes from 6:30 - 8pm.

There are still some last minute things that need to be set up so it would be good if the Scouts can show up around 6pm behind the Super Store. You can drop them off at the farthest ball diamond behind the Super Store. Mark will be there at 6pm but please make sure you confirm that he is there before leaving your Scout.

They should wear/bring dark clothes, scary masks, and sturdy boots or rain boots. They should also have their flashlight and a pocket knife (we have some rope work to set up).

Pickup is at 8pm behind the Nashwaaksis United Church.

This is an optional event but the kids always have a REALLY good time doing it. I hope to see many of you out.

Scouts drop off policy clarification

Hi everyone,

I would like to clarify a few points about dropping off your kids at Scouts.

We often do events that are outside of the normal meeting place at the church. We always allow a bit of extra time for late arrivals but usually that won't be longer than 10 minutes.

It is imperative that you know, before leaving your son at Scouts, that there are leaders present and that we are at that location.

If we are at an outside location, do not leave your son without supervision.

If we are going to an outdoor location or some other event, do not assume that your son knows where we are going and let them try to catch up. We often will change our plans mid-hike to explore some other interesting area.

Do not transport other Scouts between locations without getting approval from that Scouts parents.

Dusk 'til Dawn 2010

Next weekend (Sept 25th) we are attending the annual Dusk 'til Dawn event at Yoho.

This is an event that they will talk about for years to come. The Scouts will spend the entire night doing really cool activities. Here are the details:

Where: Yoho Scout Reserve -- Miller Campground

Date: Saturday, September 25th to Sunday, September 27th

Time: Registration 7:00pm, Event starts at 9:00 pm and ends at 7:00am.

Cost: $10 per Scout

The boys do not need camping supplies but they must bring a backpack with the following items:

* A water bottle

* A snack (other snacks will be provided at the 2am "lunch" break.

* Hat and mittens (it gets cold in the middle of the night!)

* Good footwear. (no sandals!)

* Rain wear (if it looks like it will rain)

* Warn jacket AND sweater

* extra socks

* Optional: knife, matches, first-aid kit

* Required medication

* 2 flashlights or headlamps

All scouts must wear their uniforms.

Biking Camp

As I mentioned last night at registration, we are having our first camp this coming weekend on Saturday and Sunday (Sept 18th & 19th).

Here are the details:

Drop-off: 9am on Saturday at Nashwaaksis United Church (back parking lot)

Pickup: 4pm on Sunday at Mactaquac water tower Map (http://goo.gl/maps/Gxhl)

Bikes: Everyone must have a bike that is in good working order. If your bike needs minor repairs (adjustments, etc) please come 1/2 hour early. If you need a bike or if your bike requires major repairs (parts need replacing) please call Andrew at 260-6193 or Mark at 261-0918 ASAP. Everyone must have a proper fitting helmet.

Dress in layers on Saturday. It will start chilly and get warmer.

Extra shoes are mandatory and should be packed because we WILL be getting wet and muddy on the bike ride.

We will provide all meals except for lunch and snack on Saturday. We will serve supper, breakfast, Sunday lunch and Sunday snacks. We will have extra water available and they should only need 1L for the bike ride.

This coming Monday night is our end of year BBQ at Killarney lake beach.

The event will start at 6pm and will include:
- BBQ (burgers and hotdogs by M&M)
- Moving up ceremony for each section.
- Games

They Scouts might want to bring a water gun (or equivalent) if the weather is warm. We'll try to get wet at the end of the evening.

This event is for all youth and families.

Turtle Mountain 2010

We had an amazing weekend backpacking! Turtle mountain is a super location to camp and the view from the top is breathtaking.

On Saturday we arrived at 8am. We hiked the first 3km to the bridge between Little John and Robin Hood lakes. Congrats to Wayne and Jarod for catching 2 fish using our home made poles!

We continued up to the main plateau around 6km up and ate lunch.

We took a 3.5 km detour up Mawhane Mountain before coming back to the plateau to set up camp and eat supper.

A beautiful evening and fire finished off day 1 and everyone was tired and slept soundly on the slab of granite that we had for a bed.

The morning of day 2 was taken up by our summit of Turtle Mountain. This 8 km round trip hike was tiring but everyone came away impressed by the amazing view at the top of the mountain. Truly spectacular 360 degree view. You can see the Bay of Fundy!

We made our way back down the mountain, ate a quick lunch and finished off the day with a trip back down to the lakes for a little more fishing.

Congrats to the Scouts for finishing a hard hike with heavy packs. They will remember this trip forever!

Turtle Mountain Hiking Trip

Our end of year hiking trip is coming up. This is going to be a great hike to Turtle Mountain near Welsford. Some basic information about Turtle mountain can be found here:

This will be a strenuous 4 - 5 hour hike in each direction. We will be completely self contained. Everything that the boys need will be carried on their backs. The trail has several amazing lakes and finishes with a beautiful view from the mountain top. It's a trip that the boys will be sure to remember!

The plan:

Meet on Saturday, May 29th, at 8am sharp at the Irving in Welsford.

We will travel as a convoy from the Irving to the trail head (approximately 5km).

We will be on the trail at 9am sharp.

We will meet back at the trail head at 5pm on Sunday.

Gear:

The equipment list for this trip emphasizes low weight. It is critical that everything the boys bring can fit into a hiking back pack securely. There can be no gear left to carry in their hands.

Scouts Canada is trying to raise awareness and emergency relief funds for the people of Haiti in this tragic time.

To do our part, the 2nd Nashwaaksis group will be doing a special "dues" for the next 2 weeks. We will contribute 100% of our dues money directly to the Red Cross Haiti relief fund. We welcome contributions of any amount to this cause. Your generosity will be appreciated by the people of Haiti.

Winter Camp

We are planning for our first winter camp of the year on January 30th. It will be at "the woodlot" near Mactaquac. The plan is:

Supper on Saturday night: Vegetarian Chili.

Recipe - Energy Balls

Here is the recipe that we used for our energy balls. You can substitute or add in whatever you want, just add enough peanut butter and honey to hold them together.

1 Cup Peanut Butter
1/2 Cup Wheat Germ
1 Cup Milk Powder
1/2 Cup Chocolate Chips
1/2 Cup Honey
1 Cup Coconut

Mix everything except the coconut together and form into balls. Roll balls in coconut until they aren't sticky anymore. Store in plastic bags.

This was inspired from a recipe in Lipsmackin' Vegetarian Backpackin'

Remembrance Day

As always, the Scouts will be taking part in the Remembrance Day parade and ceremony on Wednesday.

We will be meeting at 10am on Wednesday in front of the Armouries at the bottom of Carleton Street (by the Fredericton Public Library). Pickup will be at the same spot following the ceremony.

Please make sure that your Scout dresses warmly but they should also be wearing their uniform. I suggest that they have their necker and sash showing outside their coats. Hats and gloves should be worn.

We will also be going outside for our meeting tonight. Please make sure that your Scout comes prepared. A flashlight would be handy.

Science East

We will have hotdogs to eat but they should have something before they come because it will be late before we get to eat.

Fall camp near Mactaquac

We are scheduled for our fall camp near Mactaquac next weekend. We have decided to keep this camp to a single night because it would be difficult getting set up before dark on Friday night. So, the camp will now only run from Saturday morning until Sunday at supper time.

We have some really neat activities lined up for this camp including:

Building and sleeping in a bivouac (lean-to)
Creating a "haunted hike" for the Cubs
Feeding the Cubs
Tree-go Mactaquac

Because of the additional cost of Treego we have to charge more for this camp than usual. The fee will be $30.

Tonight is our first regular meeting. We'll be doing some quick introductory stuff and then going for a hike and having a campfire. Please make sure tonight (and every scout night) your scout comes dressed for outdoor activities. We'll be trying to get them outside as much as possible (rain or shine).

This weekend we are attending the annual Dusk 'til Dawn event at Yoho.

This is an event that they will talk about for years to come. The Scouts will spend the entire night doing really cool activities. Here are the details:

Where: Yoho Scout Reserve -- Miller Campground

Date: Saturday, September 26th to Sunday, September 27th

Time: Registration 7:00 pm, Event starts at 9:00 pm and ends at 7:30 am.

Cost: $10 per Scout

The boys do not need camping supplies but they must bring a backpack with the following items:

* A water bottle
* A snack (other snacks will be provided at the 2am "lunch" break.
* Hat and mittens (it gets cold in the middle of the night!)
* Good footwear. (no sandals!)
* Rain wear (if it looks like it will rain)
* Warn jacket AND sweater
* extra socks
* Optional: knife, matches, first-aid kit
* Required medication
* 2 flashlights or headlamps

All scouts must wear their uniforms.

We will register at the Interpretive Center at 7pm.

Well, we had a fabulous weekend on the water! The weather was great and the boys had a great time. What a way to start the year! Here are some pics from the adventure.
